05.15.2020> The Social Construction of Reality RPG Limited Edition Third Eye Dice Set

In the next episode of my weekly Cyberpunk video blog, I’ll continue discussing Augmented Reality games and Nietzschean self-created meaning, through a deliberation on Vampire Roleplaying Games (Vampire: The Masquerade). Taking up the case from the film I watched this week, ‘The Night Stalker’ (1972), about a lone reporter in a gritty 1970s Las Vegas, who stumbles upon a real life vampire, I realize we can’t dismiss the supernatural and cosmically arbitrary out of hand. The madman who has a hunger to feed may be on his own wavelength, a system of displacement that is categorical more than actual, per Michel Foucault’s ‘Madness and Civilization’. That is, the designation of insanity may be a political construct more than any kind of coherent designation with clear borders. Witness the television episode teased below of ‘Luther’ season 2 episode 3, where a criminal rolls his dice in RPG style to decide what actions he will take against the social order.
‘You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice’
This made for TV movie I’m focused on this week, ‘The Night Stalker’ later became a television series, ‘Kolchak: The Night Stalker’, a kind of spiritual ancestor of ‘The X-Files’, and in that spirit of the ignored sage of wisdom, the prophet unheeded, I understand that simply because something doesn’t fit with the official narrative, or is desired- ‘under-rug-swept’ by the powers that be, doesn’t mean something isn’t of meaning to the individual, and perhaps, the world at large. It doesn’t mean a myth, subculture, or even, yes, body of lies, doesn’t have gravity for the lone, supernal, wolf. As one of my favorite Fox Mulder quotes has it. “If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.” Or, we may end up zombified alongside those swept under the rug of some ultradominant culture-monger. So, like our intrepid reporter who is disbelieved though he shouts the truth in a bid to save the world, our currency on auction is us, here, left spinning like mystical visionaries, sure of ourselves and knowing the rest are doomed degenerates. But chances are, it’ll all work out. These things have a way of, sorting themselves. Close your eyes, make a wish, and blow. Roll your bones for charisma, and as the rules of The Masquerade bid you, keep that reasonable human nature a healthy distance… from the beast inside…
