He has never made the transition from position of outsider storming the citadel to holding the authority of the office. Because he lacks the mental capacity to understand the system he lives within, he has always been his own worst enemy, if he actually had any goals he wanted to achieve. And it’s fine, because his views are fundamentally anti-American. He will never be President. He is simply a failed experiment trying to make a shit-flinging monkey wear a suit for a prolonged period of time.
