Man Ray and others involved have released statements, claiming responsibility for the bombing.
“An original is a creation motivated by desire. Any reproduction of an originals motivated be necessity. It is marvelous that we are the only species that creates gratuitous forms. To create is divine, to reproduce is human.”
― Man Ray
“Eternity is the best policy.”
― Kurt Schwitters
“That’s a beautiful speech, but nobody’s listening. Let’s go.”
― Alfred Jarry, Ubu Roi
“This place has only three exits, sir: Madness, and Death.”
― Rene Daumal, A Night of Serious Drinking
Rene Daumal was the builder of the bomb and so far has escaped to an alternate dimension to avoid police, but he called the bombing all part of ‘Le Grand Jeu’ (The Great Game). Why did he do it, people want to know? His enigmatic response was: “A knife is neither true nor false, but anyone impaled on its blade is in error.”
― Rene Daumal, Mount Analogue
Andre Breton was even more fervent, when he stated plainly into a smashed camera in a closet somewhere: “
“The simplest Surrealist act consists of dashing down the street, pistol in hand, and firing blindly, as fast as you can pull the trigger, into the crowd. Anyone who, at least once in his life, has not dreamed of thus putting an end to the petty system of debasement and cretinization in effect has a well-defined place in that crowd with his belly at barrel-level.”
― André Breton, Manifestoes of Surrealism
