My Response to James Lindsay’s Video ‘Critical Education is Brainwashing’

By

James Lindsay argues that the education system is based on a framework (constructivism) that attempts to enmesh students emotionally, situationally, to engage them in their learning experience. And because it seeks to encourage their engagement, trying to open them, touch their core, it is brainwashing.

I think, sure, it’s brainwashing. But the argument doesn’t say whether brainwashing is bad.

Is brainwashing bad?

Well, to answer that and the questions underneath that one would need to have an opinion on many things regarding human nature and the nature of life and the world. Is man inherently good or evil? Is man born free and good but everywhere in chains? Or are we born with original sin and need to work to redeemed? Are these the questions a public school needs to address? Or is a public school just a place you put a kid while his parents are at their job, so the kids can grow up to get a job, then have kids, who will work, and then die?

It’s public school. Teachers do their best. And James Lindsay offers no vision for any alternative.

As I understand it the most influential figures in American education are William James and John Dewey, and the tradition is one of pragmatism largely. James’s latching on to trendy topical motions does not portend for education as a whole. Also, what idea of a non-critical education might he have in mind?

If it’s not critical-based, mustn’t it have to take the form of a pedagogy that imposes a false objectivity, lacking true foundation, as we as humans do not know all of this world’s truth? I think there is certainly room in education to teach self-reliance and strong values to stand apart from the crowd. But…

And correct me if I’m wrong, but James Lindsay seems to be calling for an indoctrination education that cuts off all questioning and discussion.

Finally, if he might be calling for a new type of education, or home schooling, or more diligent education for those who want education to be more tied to the truth of life… How does education relate to teleology? The purpose of education is generally believed to be to prepare one for life, but then what is the purpose of life?

In my view, education IS the purpose of life.
